A Fool and His Money are Soon Parted

You surely have heard about the phrase “A fool and his money are soon parted” what does it mean? Well if you don’t know, the phrase is pretty old. It originated at least 460 years ago. The poet named Thomas Tusser wrote in his poem called Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry. The poem was written in the year 1557, which makes the phrase quite old.

While the phrase was written as “A foole and his money be soone at debate: which after with sorow repents him too late” which is quite different from how we used to write it now but the expression has the same meaning as “A fool and his money are soon parted”.

Well when we look into the meaning of the phrase it’s quite self explanatory. It says that the one who spends his money carelessly will soon lose all his money. For instance the one who spends money just on the essentials like food, clothes, water and other daily life essentials is more likely to save money that would last longer rather than the one who is spending on unnecessary stuff.

As the famous quote says that “the one who buys what he does not need, steals from himself”. The proverb highlights the difference between wants and needs. All of us sometimes shop more than what we need but it is harmful when it becomes a lifestyle. Wasting money can put your financial position in jeopardy.

Saving is always a good idea

A fool and his money are soon parted, sheds the light on how thoughtfully we should spend our money. Make a plan on how you are going to spend your money, saving is always a safe way. Put some portion of your monthly earnings aside and save them for the time you “need” it. Don’t spend all of your money on your wants. Sometimes we want to buy something so desperately in a moment which later turns out to be Impulse shopping, to avoid that, always think twice before purchasing stuff.

As Warren Buffett said in his famous quote, “Do not save what is left after spending, but spend what is left after saving”. Despite being the fourth wealthiest man in the world, Buffet is giving us advice to save money instead of spending here and there. If you are not saving till to date then you should start it from today. A baby step towards a wise habit is always a healthy choice. Today you might not need any money but who knows the future. Start saving from today.

This proverb is wise advice by Thomas Tusser a long time ago. Money has always been important since the start but with the increasing value of everything these days it is even more to think twice before you spend your money on something. With the online shopping trend it is mandatory to check if the product you are buying or place where you spending your money is not scam.
