How Much Does a Penny Weigh

The weight of the penny depends on three different factors: thickness, material composition, and diameter. Each coin has a different weight depending on its diameter, thickness, and different diameter. There is no certain weight that is certain for a coin. Since 1971 the United States half-dollar has been manufactured of 25% percent nickel and 75% copper with a diameter of 30.6 millimeters. With a tolerance of 0.454 the coins weigh 11.34. 

From 1965 until 1970 the coin weighed 11.5 grams with 0.4 grams tolerance. It consists of 60% copper and 40% silver.

In 1794 the United States started producing silver dollars. The composition changed over time. Currently US mint Native American dollar series. With an outer layer of 775 copper, magnesium 7%, zinc 12%and nickel 4%. With a diameter of 26.5 millimeters, the weight of the coin is 8.1 grams.

From 1794 to 1935 all the silver dollars were composed of 10% copper and 90% silver. The coin weighed 26.956 with a diameter of 39.5 to 38.1 millimeters.
